Frequently Asked Questions
Last updated: June 2026
What does Video Tagger actually do?
It adds cover art, descriptions, and proper names to your personal video files, then writes the sidecar files that Plex, Jellyfin, Kodi, and Emby expect — all stored next to your videos on your own computer.
Does it upload my videos or filenames?
No. The app runs entirely on your Mac. Your videos, filenames, and library structure never leave your disk. Provider lookups are made directly from your machine.
Can I undo changes?
Yes. Every apply creates an undo record. You can undo single files or whole batches, and the records persist even after you close and reopen the app.
Which media servers does it support?
Plex, Jellyfin, Kodi, and Emby. Choose a built-in compatibility profile in Settings, or create your own custom naming format.
Do I need a TMDB API key?
Yes, for TMDB movie & TV lookups. TMDB offers free personal keys. Other providers may have their own requirements, and the app doesn't include any shared key.
What does the Pro license include?
Pro lets you keep using Video Tagger after the 7-day trial and unlocks batch apply, batch undo, custom naming templates, and priority email support.
What about Windows?
macOS is the first platform. A Windows version is planned — sign up on the download section and we'll email you when it's ready.
Is there a free trial?
Yes. Every new user gets a 7-day free trial with the full local workflow. No card is required to start.
How much does it cost?
Trial is free for 7 days. Pro Annual is $9.90 / year. Pro Lifetime is $19.90 one-time. Prices are in USD and processed by Paddle.
Does the app collect telemetry or analytics?
No. Video Tagger does not include telemetry, analytics, or crash reporting. Your library data stays on your computer. The website uses Cloudflare Web Analytics, a privacy-first service without cookies.
How does Video Tagger compare to FileBot?
Video Tagger is built for privacy-first local use on macOS. Like FileBot, it fetches metadata and renames files, but everything stays on your machine, with batch undo, custom naming templates, and native sidecar support for Plex, Jellyfin, Kodi, and Emby.
Can Video Tagger handle TV shows and anime?
Yes. It supports season/episode naming templates and can fetch metadata from TMDB and TVDB for TV shows and anime.
Why does Video Tagger need a TMDB API key?
Requiring your own key keeps provider lookups private and avoids relying on a shared key that could be rate-limited or revoked. It also lets TMDB attribute usage to individual users.
Does Video Tagger modify my original video files?
It never re-encodes or changes the contents of your original media files. If you enable batch rename, it may rename files and organize them into folders according to your naming template; otherwise it only writes sidecar files (such as NFO, posters, and fanart) next to your videos.
