Custom Naming Templates

Video Tagger is a local-first desktop app for macOS that cleans up filenames, fetches movie & TV metadata, and writes Plex / Jellyfin / Kodi / Emby-compatible sidecar files next to your videos.

Video Tagger includes built-in presets for Plex, Jellyfin, Kodi, and Emby. You can also create a custom naming template to match your own library convention.

Built-in presets

• Plex: optimized for Plex agent matching and local media asset discovery.
• Jellyfin: follows Jellyfin's recommended movie and episode naming conventions.
• Kodi: uses Kodi-compatible .nfo and artwork filenames.
• Emby: aligns with Emby's standard sidecar layout.

Template tokens

Custom templates support tokens such as:

• {title} — movie or episode title
• {year} — release year
• {season} and {episode} — season and episode numbers
• {tmdb_id} — TMDB identifier

Example outputs

• Movie: Example Movie (1999).mkv
• Episode: Show Name - S01E02 - Episode Title.mkv
• Season folder: Season 01

How to choose a template

1. Open Settings > Naming in Video Tagger.
2. Select a built-in preset or enable custom template editing.
3. Preview a few files to confirm the output format.
4. Apply the rename along with metadata and artwork.
